"Tagpi-tagping tahan" is a captivating theme that has always held a special place in my heart. It portrays a humble abode, constructed from a mishmash of discarded materials. This poignant artwork serves as a reminder that even the scraps we cast aside – the remnants of our daily lives – can find new purpose in sheltering others. The barong barong hut depicted in this piece stands as a symbol of both struggle and triumph. It represents the indomitable spirit of those who, despite their meager means, manage to create a sanctuary amidst the chaos. The mother and son, portrayed with tender brushstrokes, embody the strength and unity that can be found within the confines of these makeshift dwellings
Life Goes On
Oil on canvas
57 X 45 inches
2021 (April)
This painting is about the Filipino spirit of hope and determination to survive and remain positive amidst pandemics and calamities. Even in this new normal situation, we were able to find peace and developed coping mechanisms over a long history of experience with catastrophes. Filipinos ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world have a more positive outlook in life. Every time our nation faces calamity, we always stand up, adapt, and recover. It is from this that we have been called a resilient nation. As always, LIFE GOES ON in the Philippines
Teody Boylie "Bong" Perez - Artist Statement
“What is crucial to me is gaining a deep understanding of the fundamental conditions that exist in my country, and how I relate to them. I firmly believe that to create meaningful art, one must first appreciate the great ideas that are relevant to their country, and then strive to achieve a masterful freedom in expressing them. By continuing to explore and understand the fundamental conditions of my homeland, I am confident that I can create art that is both meaningful and impactful.
My time studying in Japan has been transformative, as it has allowed me to develop my mind, soul, and heart through diligent work. Through this training, I have discovered the utmost freedom of expression, and have honed a fluid technique that responds to every inspiration and enthusiasm that thrills me. Regardless of the subject matter or location of my paintings, my art will always be characteristically Filipino.”
